Overview
Creating visual value
The Point
Stapleton has set a very high standard for architecture in our residential, commercial and landscape designs. Forest City has a long-term investment in Stapleton, so we’re working to create a place that will stand the test of time. We believe that good design creates good long-term value... for everyone involved.
Public art is just one way Stapleton is working to create value in its landscape. Above you will see the existing artwork featured throughout the community. As Stapleton grows, our art collection will expand, becoming more and more a living gallery.
The Artwork
Above you will see the six existing public art pieces strategically placed throughout the Stapleton community.
Airfoils by Patrick Marold (Denver, CO)
Commission: $100,000
The kinetic sculpture at the civic plaza at Northfield Stapleton was fabricated from recycled horizontal tail stabilizers from 737 airplanes. These echoes of Stapleton history provide continuity.
The Eye and the Horizon by Ilan Averbuch (Long Island City, NY)
Commission: $100,000
Recycled stone frames the elliptical sculpture installed at East 29th Avenue and Xenia Street. This and other sculptures respond to the sustainability principles by requiring minimal or no maintenance.
Founders Fountain by lead artists Andy Dufford and Christian Muller, and Nuszer Kopatz Design, Landscape Architect. (Denver, CO)
This visual reminder of the story of water in Colorado emphasizes the importance of sustainability of this resource. It truly embodies the intent of public art and has become a meeting ground, lunch-time getaway and gathering spot for the community.
Conditional Reflections by artist team UrbanRock Design; Russell Rock and Jeanine Centuori (Los Angeles, CA)
Commission: $75,000
Located at the F15 Pool, this artwork features three laminated glass panels that depict the three states of water: solid, vapor and liquid. An arrangement of concrete cylinders in the adjacent plaza illustrates the molecular structure of ice, liquid and vapor, reinforcing these conditional states.
Geodes by Andy Dufford (Denver, CO)
On the Central Park Blvd. Bridge, the limestone geode formations create surfaces that reveal the play of light day and night.
Bridge Towers by Douglas Lamson (Denver, CO)
These two vertical steel embellishments on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard bridge signal pedestrian overlooks to Westerly Creek.
Garden Stories by Lars Stanley (Austin, Texas)
Commission: $75,000
Artwork in Greenway Park features a forged steel entry gate and a series of slim, graceful wrought steel poles with abstracted garden images at the top. Fruits, vegetables in various stages of development, and images of common garden tools invite gardeners and visitors to enjoy this community garden.
The Picnic by Gerald Heffernon (Winters, CA)
Commission: $110,000
This life size bronze sculptural tableau in the ellipse at East 35th Avenue and Xenia Street features four elegant dogs lounging on a large flat boulder and enjoying a relaxed picnic of wine, cheese and fruit.
The Program
Adopted in early 2005, the Public Art Master Plan provides both guidelines and inspiration for dynamic public art in various locations throughout Stapleton. A Public Art Advisory Committee made up of artists, residents and representatives of other community interests, carefully selects the artists and artwork. The committee evaluates the art based on the qualities of continuity, variety and sustainability, characteristics that speak to Stapleton's mission.
The committee continues to explore a variety of artwork to be placed in accessible locations that encourage people to engage in dialogue with each piece. Each of these locations is selected because of its importance in the life of the Stapleton community.
"Public art has not only the opportunity, but the responsibility, to engage a community," explains Barbara Neal, Stapleton’s public art consultant.
